Monument Health opened a vascular hybrid operating room at Rapid City Hospital in July 2026, the health system announced Nov. 5. The room combines a sterile surgical suite with high-resolution imaging, allowing surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures and open surgery in the same space without moving a patient, according to Monument Health.
Monument Health said vascular and cardiothoracic surgeon Tommaso Cambiaghi, M.D., will be the room’s primary surgeon. The system said procedures available there include complex endovascular aortic aneurysm repairs, peripheral vascular interventions and structural heart procedures. The imaging also supports fenestrated and branched endografts, limb-salvage interventions and hybrid endovascular-open cardiac surgery, according to the announcement.
The room allows surgeons to guide devices through blood vessels accessed at the groin, elbow or wrist while viewing live images, Monument Health said. The team can transition to open surgery if needed, with anesthesia and heart-lung bypass equipment available in the room, the system said.
Before these services were available locally, some patients had to travel to centers such as Denver or Minneapolis for procedures and follow-up imaging, according to Monument Health. The system said the Heart and Vascular Institute is continuing to grow and that the new room is intended to expand complex cardiovascular care for patients in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming.
Monument Health did not provide a cost or contact details for the room in its announcement.
